Super-on-time and not rudely late at all! (sorry, guys, work was horrible the past two weeks 😩 )

11 QUESTIONS – tagged by @esotheria-sims

Always repost the rules. Answer the random 11 questions posted for you. Create 11 new ones and tag 11 people. Let the person who tagged you know that you answered.

1. If you could be related to a celebrity, who would it be and why?
I have spent a lot of time trying to answer this, best I could come up with was “Maybe Patrick Wolf, then I’d at least have a chance to meet him in person. But then again I also find him really attractive and that makes everything horrible.”.

2. What was the last movie you saw? Did you like it?
That would be Insomnia, and yes, it was quite good! Some plot holes here and there, but good actors and good directing, so overall it gets a recommendation from me.

3. If you could work for any big corporation/company for a year, which one would you pick?
Got to be honest here, I don’t do corporate work and can’t see myself working in that field. An NGO, though… like maybe the Red Cross or Doctors without Borders… definitely something I’d consider. But I have to get better in my field before I can think of anything like that.

4.  Do you usually remember your dreams in the morning? Describe a recent one you had.
I do right when I wake up, but by the time I clear my head (which takes about 5 minutes) I can barely remember a thing. The last one I can remember anything about was complete nonsense, something about the Queen of England visiting my country and how me and some of my friends were going to see her. We got a building resembling a French chateau, but the only way to cross the front garden and get to the entrance was to go through a maze of yellow cloth tubes (???). I eventually made it out the maze, but woke up before I could get reunited with my friends or meet the queen. IDK, man, if anyone’s good with dream interpretation, here’s a challenge for you.

5. What was the last book that made you cry?
I can’t think of a single one that ever did, actually. Movies sometimes do, the worst offender is probably Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It gets worse with every viewing.

6. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Probably about 15. If the temperatures allow it, about 50% of the time I’ll be wearing the same cheap pair of sneakers until they fall apart. Then I just replace them with an identical pair.

7. List six favorite names (3 male, 3 female) that are typical for your country.
Male: Emil, Victor, Liviu
Female: Eva, Adelina, Elisabeta

8. How many photos do you currently have on your phone?
288, apparently. Most of them are just phone wallpapers I’ve downloaded. Another good chunk is made up of pictures of silly/downright stupid things I run across IRL. Looking through those makes my day better.

9. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 30 and copy the first two sentences. What would you think the book is about, if you were to judge only by the copied excerpt?
(Okay, so the book was in Romanian and has never been officially translated in English, not to my knowledge. The translation is mine, so it’s probably not great.)
Although I tried to struggle free from the mire of those bitter doubts, a force was opposing me, making me drown in anxiety and frustration. I could almost hear Emil’s voice, speaking to me in a whisper “I’m sorry, you know![
]” (Ilinca Bernea – Semnul lunii)
Hm… sounds like a love story, and Emil just betrayed someone with a very… tempestuous and sensitive personality.

10. A distant relative has just died and left you a fortune. What is the first thing you do with the money?
Donate. Most likely to a hospital? In my country, hospitals are severely underfunded. Like, sometimes they run out of basic supplies or medicine. And some of their equipment can be decades old. So… yeah. (But I’d ask for receipts for every goddamn thing. Because there’s no way I’m trusting them not to misappropriate the funds.)

11. If you could have any fantasy creature as a pet, which one would it be?
Do incubuses count? jk. A phoenix maybe? I imagine they’d be gorgeous. Something like a peacock or a bird of paradise… Though I’d love it even if it looked like a common sparrow.

Anyway, thanks for the tags, everyone ❀  And sorry again for taking too much time to do this.

Book meme :D

Tagged by @damask-wallpaper and @heimlichbourger – thank you ❀ ! Wall of text incoming because I love (and dearly miss having the time to read) books.

1. Semnul lunii – Ilinca Bernea

My list starts with a contemporary Romanian writer whose earlier work is impossible to find, not because I’m that pretentious a hipster, but because I am Romanian and this book was published when I was in my teens and had gotten more seriously into reading. And because it was the first book that I felt truly spoke to me.

2. Demian – Hermann Hesse

“I do not consider myself less ignorant than most people. I have been and still am a seeker, but I have ceased to question stars and books; I have begun to listen to the teachings my blood whispers to me.”

3. Brave New World – Aldous Huxley

4. Steppenwolf – Herman Hesse

“The mistaken and unhappy notion that a man is an enduring unity is known to you. It is also known to you that man consists of a multitude of souls, of numerous selves. […] Science is […] right as no multiplicity may be dealt with unless there be a series, a certain order and grouping. It is wrong insofar as it holds that one only and binding and lifelong order is possible for the multiplicity of subordinate selves.”

5. 1984 – George Orwell

6. Orlando – Virginia Woolf

Full disclosure: I actually saw the film adaptation before I read the book. Can’t shake the feeling that the book gave us a more well-rounded main character than the film did. Tilda Swinton is still brilliant, though.

7. Citadelle/Wisdom of the Sands – Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry

So, so hard to read, but so worth it. The structure can be a bit confusing and the writing in general can feel repetitive, but the book exudes a beautiful warmth and displays an interesting perspective on human nature.

8. The Little Golden Calf – Ilf and Petrov

My first experience with written satire. Absolutely delicious, and perhaps easy for me to relate to because… well… living in a former communist country means it’s not hard to draw parallels between the society you live in and the one described in the novel.

9. The Absolute at Large – Karel Čapek

“[…] nobody, be they believers or non-believers, could have any use for a real, active god. It simply cannot be, gentlemen. It’s out of the question.”

10. Manuscript Found in a Pocket – Julio CortĂĄzar

Before this, I read Aleph by Borges, and I can definitely see some similarities, but I much prefer CortĂĄzar’s work. The fantasy element in his short stories just kind of seeps in, at first almost unnoticed, and then just slowly takes over.

That’s about it! Sorry about not tagging anyone, but until I got some time to compile the list, everyone seems to have already done the meme, so… maybe next time! 🙂

Meme :D

Thank you very much for the tag, @theboldandthebeautifulsims! ❀

Rules: Tag 9 people you want to get to know better
Relationship status: in a relationship
Favorite color: black, emerald green, blue
Pets: I wish 😩 I’d really love to have a dog or two or five
Wake up: 6:30 on weekdays, 8-ish on weekends
Coke or Pepsi: It used to be Pepsi Twist but now I like Coke all of a sudden?!
Day or night: I wish my brain would actually pick one of the two. Daytime = maximum energy, but night time = maximum focus.
Text or call: text, definitely. I used to feel irrationally panicked when I had to call people I didn’t know very well. Time (and the invention of mobile phones) made things much easier, but I still prefer texting.
Chapstick or lipstick: I’ve used chapstick more often than I did lipstick, but don’t really like the texture of either.

Most people seem to have already done this one, so no tags this time.

😀 Thank you so much for the list! I’ve read The Aleph by Borges and did like it, so you were spot on with that one!

Any opinions on Ernesto Sabato? I remember reading a book by him (Antes del fin, maybe?) almost 6 years ago and really enjoying his writing style. Now, a good friend of mine has been insisting that I try Abaddón el exterminador. Time issues aside, I’m pretty tempted.

I.. honestly don’t like him much. I read El tĂșnel and Sobre hĂ©roes y tumbas (which goes before AbaddĂłn, I think?) and he’s just so
Argentinian, ugh xD But his writing style is indeed impeccable and if you like deep psychological analysis of characters you’re going to love him (and if you don’t like the characters you’re pretty much screwed because he won’t give you a break). But your friend probably knows what you like way better than me so give it a try! He’s by no means a bad writer, on the contrary (?).

I usually love books (and films) that focus on thorough descriptions of their characters, but then there’s Dostoevsky 😛 Granted, I only read The Brothers Karamazov, and do plan on giving his books a second chance, but that novel was exasperating. It was a disappointing experience, because I heard so many good things about the author, but most of the characters just felt unnatural (?) to me. I just couldn’t connect with that book, no matter how much I tried.

It’s been a while since a book has captivated me to such an extent that I lost track of time. It also made me realise that I haven’t read a lot of South American literature 😩 So… if anyone can recommend me some good authors, I’m all ears (eyes?).

Meme thing

Tagged by theboldandthebeautifulsims

Name: Ruxandra
Current time and date: 12:20 PM, 29/03/2015 – finished at 13:36 because I’m easily distracted.
Average hours of sleep: ideally 8, failing that, at least 6
Last thing I Googled: Patrick Wolf, one of my few celebrity crushes. I was a fan of his about 6 years ago, and still Google pics of him every now and then.
Nickname: Ruxi
Birthday: 24 July
Gender: Female
Favourite colour: Can I have at least two favourites? ‘Cause I can’t pick between blue and green 😛
One place that makes me happy: The first place that comes to mind is Vama Veche, a small village by the seaside in my country. I had the best summer holidays there. The atmosphere there changed a lot, tough, so I probably won’t be going back 😩
Number of blankets I sleep under: 0-2 depending on the season.
Favourite movie: Don’t get me started on films, I was this close to making a separate blog with film reviews. 12 Angry Men, I guess? Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is a close second.
What I am wearing: Black jeans, socks and an old green blouse I got as a gift for my 18th birthday.
Last book I read: Huis Clos (No Exit) by Jean-Paul Sartre. Currently reading a collection of short stories by Julio CortĂĄzar.
Most used phrase: “sort of”, “[…] and shit”, and a Romanian equivalent of “oh, my God”.
Last thing I said to a family member: “Love you! Kisses! Bye!”
First words that come to mind: Bubbly
Favourite fictional character: Demian, from the eponymous novel by Hermann Hesse.
Favourite beverage: Tie between Earl Grey and mint tea.
Favourite food: Potatoes, no matter how you cook them.
Last movie I saw in the cinema: The Imitation Game. IMO, it gets a 7/10 because the screenplay was formulaic and felt historically inaccurate.
Dream vacation: Just any vacation would be fine right about now 😛
Dream wedding: Small, casual-dress, no ridiculous church service (I’d take a short, solemn one), no pagan customs and superstitions (I feel no emotional connection to them).
Dream pet: Dogs! And birds.
Dream job: Mine, but with less paperwork and better training.

This is a Tumblr hug! :) Pass it on to at least 10 of your favorite followers and remember: you can break the chain if you don’t feel comfortable with passing it on! ~theboldandthebeautifulsims

😀 Thank you and a huge hug right back! You’re awesome and I love your simming style 🙂 Also, thank you for uploading your sims, I rarely download sims these days, but yours were too awesome to pass up, so I snagged a bunch.
